PRAXIS The Praxis Series is an Educational Testing Service (ETS) program that provides tests and other services for states to use as part of their teacher certification process. The Praxis Series assessments are also used by colleges and universities to qualify individuals for entry into teacher education programs. A number of professional associations and organizations also use these tests. The three categories of assessments in the Praxis Series correspond to the three milestones in your development as a teacher: entering a teacher training program, graduating from college and entering the profession, and your first year of teaching. Praxis I: Academic Skills Assessments are designed to be taken early in your college career to measure your reading, writing, and mathematical skills. The assessments are available in two formats: the paper-based Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) or the Praxis I Computer-Based Tests (PI-CBT). Each measure the basic academic skills vital to all teacher candidates. Please call our office at 621-7589 to schedule the Praxis I Computer-Based Tests (PI-CBT). Praxis II: Subject Assessments measure your knowledge of the subjects you will teach. They also measure your general and subject-specific pedagogical skills and knowledge. The following Subject Assessments are offered: Core Battery Tests, Subject Assessments/Specialty Area Tests, Multiple Subjects Assessment for Teachers (MSAT) and Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Tests. Please check the Praxis website for available dates: www.ets.org/PRAXIS. Praxis III: Classroom Performance Assessments are used to evaluate all aspects of a beginning teacher's classroom performance. Designed to assist in making licensure decisions, these comprehensive assessments are conducted in the teacher's own classroom by trained local observers who employ a set of consistent, reliable, nationally validated criteria. The assessments are typically administered during the first year of teaching, although under special circumstances they may take place during the second year. For more information please call the Testing Office at (520) 621-7589 or stop by our office in the Old Main Building Room 219 (UA Campus) M-F 9am-5pm.
